TEHRAN -- Iran has already taken a step to help resolve the dispute over its nuclear program through cooperating with the International Atomic Energy Agency, and now it is the major powers’ turn, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Thursday.
Ahmadinejad made the remarks during a speech in the southeastern city of Kerman in response to a Russian proposal for a “step-by-step” approach, made on July 13, according to which Iran could address questions about its nuclear program and be rewarded with a gradual easing of sanctions.
“They (the Russians) have proposed a step-by-step (approach) appertaining to Iran’s cooperation (with the IAEA) in regard to the nuclear issue. Alright, we have taken a step and have cooperated with the agency,” Ahmadinejad stated, according to IRNA.
“Now you take a step, let’s work out a plan together. You take one step, and we will take one,” he said, addressing the major powers.
“We have stated that we are not seeking a bomb. We have also said that if we want it, we are not afraid of anyone and will announce that,” Ahmadinejad stated.

He added, “Westerners are imposing sanctions on us and do not supply us with parts required by our planes and factories under the claim that they want to prevent Iran from developing an atomic bomb.”
Elsewhere in his remarks, Ahmadinejad dismissed claims that Iran poses a threat to regional and European countries, saying, “Claims that Iran plans to hit Russia or Europe with its missiles are all lies. We do not need to do that, and we are friends of Russia and others.”

“Some say that Iran intends to attack Arab countries… It is clear that such remarks have no basis in fact,” he added.
